Emma "Hermione" Watson, co- star in the Harry Potter movie series, is now the cover model of Burberry’s Winter 2009/ 2010 ad campaign which uses her onscreen character to explicate the modernly edgy and cerebral outerwear and accessory line anchoring the winter collection.
Christopher Bailey comments to WWD: "I wanted the images to represent both the rich history and the modernity of the Burberry brand, while at the same time reflecting a quiet beauty, timelessness and strength that is particularly significant today."
The rich history, no doubt, is present in the winter line, as the principal colors are black, khaki, olive, and the 2009 winter favorite, grey---translating into nothing daring and that is quite typical of the aesthetic and structure of past lines. Yet, this stable backdrop, perhaps, is what allows the "quiet beauty" Christopher Bailey discussed to insert itself.
It is the updated nova-check print that establishes an edgy appeal exaggerated by the quietly confident Emma Watson pictured as the leader of an all boy gang. The image seeks to poise the nova check as the renegade leader of known aesthetic, incidentally appointing Emma as that rebel-rousing glamour gang leader and the boys an established idea.
A novel idea seemingly wasted on the predictable winter outerwear line. A more worthy focus would have been on the stunning women’s wear enshrouded underneath the down ,trench and pea-coats.
